Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed to help individuals over the age of 65, or under 65 with disabilities, cover certain medical costs. Medicare has four parts: A and B, or Original Medicare, which are run by the federal government. Part C, called Medicare Advantage, offers additional coverage and is available from private health insurance companies that contract with the government. Part D covers prescription drugs.
Medicare doesn’t cover all health care costs. Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap, should be an essential part of your health insurance portfolio. As retirement approaches, it’s important to take a realistic look at medical expenses and purchase a plan to supplement your Medicare insurance coverage in order to live out your retirement knowing that you are protected from major medical expenses.
Medicare Supplements help pay for costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.
